Resource Levels
Every language in Parlabase has a resource level of high, medium or low. It is our guide to how good the live translation is likely to be in each language, so you know what to expect before your guests arrive.
Tip: The best way to find out how well Parlabase works for your guests’ languages is to sign up for a free account and run a test with the 180 welcome minutes it comes with.
What is a Resource Level
The AI models that transcribe and translate speech learn from examples, such as recordings of people speaking, text that has already been translated and other writing found online. A language’s resource level describes how much of this material there was for the models to learn from. Languages with more of it usually get more accurate and more consistent translation.
The companies that provide our transcription and translation don’t publish how accurate they are in each language, so we have graded the languages ourselves using published research. A resource level isn’t a measure of how important a language is, and it doesn’t limit which languages you can use. It is there to help you plan.
High, Medium and Low
HighHigh resource · 28 languages
These languages have lots of material for the models to learn from, so this is where the live translation is usually at its most accurate and consistent. It still won’t be perfect, but guests reading in these languages can expect the best results.
MediumMedium resource · 41 languages
These languages are well covered but have less material behind them than the high group. They work well for most church services, conferences and classes. The wording can vary more when there are specialist words, fast speech or a noisy room.
LowLow resource · 76 languages
These languages are supported, but the models have had much less material to learn from. Lines can come out rougher, miss less common words or read a little awkwardly. If one of these languages is important to your event, do a test run first and let your guests know what to expect. Classical languages such as Latin, Sanskrit and Literary Chinese are in this group too. They are only ever translated from written text, so we don’t grade them in the same way as languages that are spoken today.
